IGNOU Revaluation: How to Apply, Fee, and What to Expect

🗓️ Last Updated: March 2026 | Verified from ignou.ac.in

The IGNOU Result is out for most programmes. and feel like your marks don’t match how you actually performed in the exam? You’re not the only one. Thousands of IGNOU students apply for revaluation every semester, feeling exactly the same way.

The good news is – we have IGNOU revaluation process. You can request a re-check of your Term End Examination answer script. And in some cases, marks do go up.

But before you apply, you need to understand exactly how the process works, what it costs, how long it takes, and most importantly, whether it’s worth it for your situation.

This article covers everything about IGNOU revaluation in simple, clear language.

What Is IGNOU Revaluation?

IGNOU revaluation is a process where you request the university to re-check your Term End Examination answer script. A different examiner looks at your paper again and re-marks it.

If the re-marking finds that your original marks were lower than what you deserved, your marks get updated. If the re-marking gives the same or lower marks, your original marks stay as they are — IGNOU does not reduce your marks during revaluation.

This is an important point. Your marks can go up or stay the same. They will not go down.

Revaluation applies only to your Term End Examination (TEE) marks — the 70% component. It does not apply to your assignment marks — the 30% component. Assignments are not subject to revaluation as per IGNOU rules.

Who Should Apply for Revaluation?

Revaluation makes sense in specific situations. Think carefully before spending money on it.

Apply for revaluation if:

  • Your TEE marks feel significantly lower than what you wrote in the exam
  • You failed a course by a small margin and getting a few more marks could change your result
  • You need a higher grade for job or higher study requirements
  • You have a gut feeling something went wrong in the checking

Don’t apply for revaluation if:

  • Your marks are already decent and you just want higher marks out of habit
  • You didn’t prepare well and know your answers weren’t strong
  • You’re hoping for a miracle jump of 20–30 marks — that rarely happens

Revaluation is most useful when you’re close to passing or close to the next grade boundary. If you scored 45 in TEE and need 50 to pass, revaluation is absolutely worth trying.

IGNOU Revaluation Fee

The revaluation fee in IGNOU is ₹750 per course as per the current policy. However, fee structures can change, so always verify the current fee on the official IGNOU website before applying.

Payment is made online through the student portal at the time of submitting the revaluation form.

One important thing — the revaluation fee is non-refundable. Whether your marks change or not, the fee is not returned. So apply only if you genuinely feel your marks need a re-check.

How to Apply for IGNOU Revaluation — Step by Step

The revaluation application process is fully online. Here’s the exact process:

Step 1: Check the notification

IGNOU announces the revaluation window after the results are declared. There is a fixed window which is usually 30 to 45 days after the result declaration – within which you must apply. Missing this window means waiting for the next cycle.

Step 2: Find the Reevaluation & Copy of Answer Scripts section

IGNOU revaluation application form on official website

Find the Reevaluation & Copy of Answer Scripts section under Student Services. or Open official portal for IGNOU revaluation. Use Chrome or Firefox for the best results.

After selecting your course, click the ADD REQUEST button. Your course details will be added to the list. The Save button will now become visible.

Step 7: Upload your IGNOU ID Card

Complete the payment through the generated link using a Debit Card, Credit Card (Visa/Master/RuPay), or Net Banking. Take a screenshot of the payment confirmation and save it.

That’s it. Your application is submitted. Now keep checking your grade card at https://gradecard.ignou.ac.in/gradecard/ every few weeks for the updated result.

IGNOU Early Revaluation — What Is It?

IGNOU also offers an Early Revaluation option for students who need their results urgently — for example, for admission to another course or for a job application deadline.

Early revaluation costs more than regular revaluation. The fee is higher and the result is supposed to come faster — within a few weeks rather than months.

However, in practice, even early revaluation can take time. If you’re in a genuine time crunch, apply for early revaluation and also keep your institution or employer informed about the pending result situation.

Check the official IGNOU website for the current early revaluation fee, as it is updated from time to time.

Courses NOT Eligible for Revaluation

Revaluation is not available for every course. You cannot apply for revaluation if:

  • The course is MCQ/OMR-based. The following specific course codes are excluded: PCO01, BSHF101, FST01, BNS041, BNS042, BLI011, BLII012, BLII013, BLII104, BEVAE181
  • The course involves a Project or Dissertation
  • The course has Practicals or Lab work
  • The course involves Workshops or Seminars
  • It is an Assignment – assignments are never subject to revaluation

Revaluation is only for written Theory TEE papers. If your course falls in any of the above categories, revaluation is not an option.

How to Get a Copy of Your Answer Script

IGNOU allows you to request a scanned copy of your evaluated answer script. This is sent to the email ID you provide in the application form. You can also request a physical photocopy sent by post.

One very important rule that most students don’t know:

If you apply for revaluation first and then separately apply for a copy of your answer script — IGNOU will only give you the copy if your script has not yet entered the revaluation process. Once it’s being processed for revaluation, they cannot provide a copy.

The smart approach: Apply for both — revaluation and copy of answer script – simultaneously in the same application. This way you get your copy regardless of where the revaluation process stands.

Looking at your answer script before revaluation makes sense too. You can actually see where marks were deducted, whether any answer was missed by the examiner, and whether the total was added correctly. This gives you concrete evidence if the checking was genuinely unfair.

IGNOU Revaluation Result – When and How to Check

This is where patience is truly needed.

IGNOU revaluation results take time. Regular revaluation results typically take 2 to 4 months after your application. Early revaluation is faster but still takes several weeks.

There is no separate portal for revaluation results. Once the re-evaluation is done and marks are updated, they reflect directly on your grade card at https://gradecard.ignou.ac.in/gradecard/

Keep checking your grade card every 2–3 weeks after applying. When the revaluation is processed, the updated marks will simply appear there — IGNOU does not send a separate notification.

If it’s been more than 4 months and you haven’t seen any update, raise a complaint on the iGRAM portal and also email sedgrievance@ignou.ac.in with your revaluation application details.

Does IGNOU Revaluation Actually Work?

This is the question every student asks. The honest answer is — sometimes yes, sometimes no.

Revaluation does result in mark changes for a portion of students. The chances are higher when:

  • Your original marks seem unusually low compared to your preparation level
  • You’re in a borderline situation — close to passing or close to the next grade
  • You wrote lengthy, detailed answers that may have been underchecked

The chances are lower when:

  • Your marks are already in a comfortable passing range
  • The original checking was thorough

There’s no official published success rate for IGNOU revaluation. But from student experiences shared across forums and communities, mark increases do happen — though they’re rarely dramatic. Getting 5 to 10 extra marks is more common than getting 20 or more.

Remember, even a small increase can matter. If it takes you from E grade to D, or from D to C (passing), it’s absolutely worth the ₹750 fee.

Revaluation vs. Improvement Exam — What’s the Difference?

Students often confuse revaluation with the improvement exam. These are two different things.

Revaluation means getting your existing answer script re-checked by a different examiner. You don’t write the exam again. You’re just asking for a second opinion on the same paper.

Improvement exam means appearing in the Term End Examination again for a course you’ve already passed, with the aim of getting a better grade. In IGNOU, you can appear in subsequent TEE cycles for courses you’ve already cleared if you want to improve your grade.

If you failed a course, you need to appear in the next TEE cycle for that course — that is not an improvement exam, that’s just a repeat attempt.

If you passed but want a better grade, you can use the improvement exam option in a later cycle.

Revaluation is the right first step if you feel the marking was unfair. If you get marks after revaluation and still want to improve further, you can then consider the improvement exam route.

Wrapping Up

IGNOU revaluation is a legitimate process and it does help students in genuine cases. If you feel your marks are unfair — especially if you’re close to passing or close to the next grade — applying for revaluation is absolutely worth it.

The key things to remember:

  • Revaluation is only for TEE marks – not assignments
  • Fee is ₹750 per course and non-refundable
  • Apply within the official window after results are declared
  • Results take 2 to 4 months to reflect on your grade card
  • Your marks can go up or stay the same — they will never go down

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What is the fee for IGNOU revaluation?

The IGNOU revaluation fee is ₹750 per course as per the current policy. You pay this fee online through the student portal at the time of submitting your revaluation application. The fee is non-refundable regardless of whether your marks change or not. Always check the official IGNOU website for the latest fee before applying, as it may be updated from time to time.

Q2. How long does IGNOU revaluation take?

IGNOU revaluation typically takes 2 to 4 months after you submit your application. There is no separate notification when it’s done — the updated marks simply appear on your grade card at the official portal. If it’s been more than 4 months with no update, raise a complaint on the iGRAM portal or email sedgrievance@ignou.ac.in with your revaluation details.

Q3. Can my marks go down after IGNOU revaluation?

No. IGNOU’s revaluation policy ensures that your marks cannot go down during the process. After re-evaluation, your marks will either increase or stay the same as the original. If the new examiner gives the same or lower marks, your original marks are retained. This makes revaluation a risk-free option in terms of your existing marks.

Q4. How do I check my IGNOU revaluation result?

There is no separate portal for revaluation results. Once your revaluation is processed, the updated marks appear directly on your IGNOU grade card at https://gradecard.ignou.ac.in/gradecard/ — the same place you check your regular results. Keep checking your grade card every 2 to 3 weeks after applying. No separate notification is sent by IGNOU when the update happens.

Q5. What is the difference between IGNOU revaluation and improvement exam?

Revaluation means requesting a re-check of your existing answer script by a different examiner — you don’t write the exam again. An improvement exam means appearing in a future TEE cycle for a course you’ve already passed, with the aim of getting a better grade. If you feel your marking was unfair, apply for revaluation first. If you want to improve a grade you’re already satisfied with, consider the improvement exam route in a later TEE cycle.
